Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1.5 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 large bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and cook for 5-7 minutes until translucent, stirring occasionally.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spoon, until fully browned and no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and beef broth.

Step 6

Season the sauce with oregano, basil, parsley, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well to combine.

Step 7

Add the bay leaf to the pot and bring the sauce to a gentle boil.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and simmer the sauce for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. The longer the sauce simmers, the better the flavor.

Step 9

Remove the bay leaf before serving.

Step 10

Serve over your favorite cooked spaghetti or pasta, and garnish with freshly chopped parsley.
