Ingredients

  • 3 medium Yellow onions
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1.5 cups Sour cream
  • 4 ounces Cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Mayonnaise
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh chives

Directions

Step 1

Peel and finely slice the yellow onions into thin half-moons.

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil together.

Step 3

Add the sliced onions to the skillet and sprinkle with salt and sugar. Stir well to coat the onions evenly.

Step 4

Cook the onions on low to medium heat for about 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are deeply golden brown and caramelized. Be patient and ensure the heat is not too high to avoid burning.

Step 5

Once caramelized, remove the onions from heat and let them cool slightly.

Step 6

While the onions cool, in a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, garlic powder, and black pepper.

Step 7

Chop the caramelized onions finely and add them to the mixture, stirring well to incorporate.

Step 8

Taste the dip and adjust salt or seasoning as needed.

Step 9

Finely chop the fresh chives and fold most of them into the dip, reserving a small amount for garnish.

Step 10

Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and sprinkle the reserved chives on top as a garnish.

Step 11

Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld, or serve immediately with your choice of chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
