Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 0.75 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 cup mini chocolate chips (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease or line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the unsweetened applesauce, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and egg whites. Whisk until smooth and fully combined.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until evenly distributed.

Step 4

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.

Step 5

If using mini chocolate chips, fold them gently into the batter at this stage.

Step 6

Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula.

Step 7

Bake for 16-18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (don’t overbake, as this can dry them out).

Step 8

Remove the pan from the oven and allow the brownies to cool in the pan for 15-20 minutes before cutting them into 12 squares and serving.
