Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 2.5 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 cup Warm water
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 pound Lean ground pork
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium Carrot, grated
  • 3 tablespoons Low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Green onions, chopped

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, baking powder, and sugar. Mix well.

Step 2

Gradually add warm water and olive oil to the flour mixture while stirring with a wooden spoon until a dough forms.

Step 3

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 15 minutes.

Step 4

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the lean ground pork until browned. Drain any excess fat.

Step 5

Add minced garlic and chopped onion to the cooked pork in the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent.

Step 6

Stir in the grated carrot, low-sodium soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, and ground black pepper. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.

Step 7

Divide the rested dough into 10 equal portions and roll each into a ball.

Step 8

Flatten each ball into a round disc about 4 inches in diameter.

Step 9

Place about 2 tablespoons of the pork filling in the center of each disc. Gather the edges around the filling and pinch them together to seal the top securely.

Step 10

Place each filled bun seam-side down on a small square of parchment paper.

Step 11

Fill a steamer with water and bring to a boil. Arrange the buns in the steamer basket, leaving space between each bun to expand.

Step 12

Cover and steam the buns over simmering water for 15 minutes, or until the buns have risen and the dough is cooked through.

Step 13

Remove the buns from the steamer and let them cool slightly before serving.

Step 14

Garnish with chopped green onions, if desired, and serve warm.
