Ingredients

  • 500 grams Fish fillets (tilapia or mackerel)
  • 1500 ml Water
  • 2 tablespoons Pepper soup spice mix
  • 1 thumb-sized piece Fresh ginger root
  • 3 pieces Garlic cloves
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 1 piece Scotch bonnet pepper
  • 200 grams Sliced mushrooms
  • 10 leaves Fresh basil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon or lime juice

Directions

Step 1

Clean and cut the fish fillets into medium-sized pieces. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large pot, add the water and bring to a boil over medium heat.

Step 3

Peel the ginger and garlic. Blend them along with the onion and Scotch bonnet pepper to form a paste.

Step 4

Add the blended paste to the boiling water, then reduce heat to simmer.

Step 5

Stir in the pepper soup spice mix, salt, and ground black pepper. Allow to simmer for 5 minutes.

Add the sliced mushrooms to the pot and continue to simmer for another 5 minutes.

Carefully add the fish pieces into the soup, ensuring they are submerged.

Simmer gently for 10 minutes until the fish is cooked through and tender.
