Ingredients

  • 250 grams Brown rice flour
  • 350 ml Warm water
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoons Coconut oil
  • 0.5 teaspoons Cumin seeds
  • 50 grams Grated coconut
  • 1 litre Water (for steaming)

Directions

Step 1

Begin by boiling 350 ml of water and adding 0.5 teaspoons of salt to it.

Step 2

In a mixing bowl, combine 250 grams of brown rice flour and the warm salted water gradually while stirring continuously with a wooden spoon to form a smooth, soft dough. Ensure there are no lumps.

Step 3

Add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and 0.5 teaspoons of cumin seeds into the dough and knead it lightly until all ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 4

Fill an idiyappam press with a portion of the dough. Close it tightly with the disc that has the smallest holes.

Step 5

Prepare the steamer by adding about 1 litre of water and bringing it to a boil.

Step 6

Grease the idly or steaming plates with a little coconut oil.

Step 7

Press the dough through the idiyappam press onto the greased plates to form circular idiyappam nests.

Step 8

Sprinkle a small amount of grated coconut (around 50 grams) on top of each nest

Step 9

Place the plates in the steamer and steam the idiyappams for about 10-15 minutes or until they are firm and cooked through.

Step 10

Remove the idiyappam from the steamer and allow it to cool slightly before serving.

Step 11

Serve the heart-healthy idiyappam with a side of lightly seasoned vegetable stew or lentils for a complete meal.
