Ingredients

  • 8 ounces whole wheat pasta
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium, finely chopped onion
  • 3 cloves, minced garlic
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 cup, chopped fresh basil
  • 0.25 cup (optional for garnishing) grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and the whole wheat pasta. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.

Step 2

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the onion becomes soft and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute, until the garlic is fragrant but not browned.

Step 4

Add the canned crushed tomatoes to the skillet, stirring to combine with the onions and garlic.

Step 5

Mix in the dried basil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Step 6

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary.

Step 7

Add the cooked pasta to the tomato sauce, tossing until the pasta is well coated.

Step 8

Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the fresh chopped basil.

Step 9

Serve the pasta immediately, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
