Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • 4 buns whole grain hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices low-fat cheddar cheese slices
  • 1 sliced tomato
  • 4 leaves green leaf lettuce
  • 0.25 thinly sliced red onion
  • 4 teaspoons dijon mustard

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine lean ground turkey, low-sodium Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Mix gently to combine, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 2

Divide the turkey mixture into four equal portions, shaping each into a loose ball about the size of a golf ball.

Step 3

Heat avocado oil in a large non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat until shimmering.

Step 4

Place the turkey balls into the hot pan, then use a sturdy spatula to smash each ball into a thin patty. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.

Step 5

During the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of low-fat cheddar cheese, allowing it to melt slightly.

Step 6

Assemble the burgers by spreading 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard on the bottom half of each whole grain bun. Top with a leaf of green leaf lettuce, a turkey patty with melted cheese, a slice of tomato, a few rings of red onion, and the top half of the bun.

Step 7

Serve immediately and enjoy a delicious and heart-healthy smash burger!
