Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Sea salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsweetened applesauce
  • 0.5 cups Skim milk
  • 1 tablespoon Extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 1 cup Canola or light olive oil (for frying)
  • 2 tablespoons Powdered sugar (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium bowl, combine whole wheat flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and sea salt. Whisk together to blend the dry ingredients thoroughly.

Step 2

In a separate large bowl, add unsweetened applesauce, skim milk, extra virgin olive oil, and honey. Mix these wet ingredients well until fully combined.

Step 3

Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring continuously with a spatula until a soft dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.

Step 4

Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rest for about 10 minutes to allow the ingredients to meld together.

Step 5

In a large, deep skillet or saucepan, pour in the canola or light olive oil for frying. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches around 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into it; it should sizzle and rise to the top.

Step 6

While the oil is heating up, prepare your dough balls by scooping tablespoons of dough and rolling them gently between your palms to form balls.

Step 7

Carefully place a few dough balls into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the dough balls in batches, turning occasionally, for about 3-4 minutes each or until they are golden brown on all sides.

Step 8

Remove the fried dough balls from the oil using a slotted spoon and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Step 9

Repeat the frying process with the remaining dough.

Step 10

If desired, dust the warm dough balls with a little powdered sugar before serving for added sweetness. Enjoy your heart-healthy treats as a delightful snack or dessert!
