Ingredients

  • 1 pound Lean ground beef (95% lean)
  • 4 Whole-grain hamburger buns
  • 4 slices Reduced-fat cheddar cheese slices
  • 1 cup Fresh spinach leaves
  • 1 medium Tomato, sliced
  • 1 small Red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium Avocado, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 cup Low-sodium ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the lean ground beef, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Mix gently to combine without overworking the meat.

Step 2

Divide the meat mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty slightly larger than the hamburger buns, making a small indentation in the center to prevent puffing during cooking.

Step 3

Heat a grill or non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly brush the grill or pan with olive oil.

Step 4

Place the patties on the grill or skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

Step 5

During the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of reduced-fat cheddar cheese and cover the grill or pan to melt the cheese.

Step 6

While the patties are cooking, slice the whole-grain buns in half and lightly toast them on the grill or in a toaster.

Step 7

Assemble the burgers by spreading a tablespoon of Dijon mustard on the bottom half of each bun, followed by a cooked patty with melted cheese.

Step 8

Top the patty with fresh spinach leaves, a few slices of tomato, red onion, and avocado.

Step 9

Finish with a tablespoon of low-sodium ketchup on the top half of each bun before placing it atop the assembled burger.

Step 10

Serve immediately with a side of heart-healthy options like sweet potato fries or a fresh salad.
