Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • 4 pieces whole wheat hamburger buns
  • 4 slices reduced-fat cheddar cheese slices
  • 1 piece large egg white
  • 1 sliced red onion
  • 4 pieces lettuce leaves
  • 1 sliced tomato
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons whole grain mustard
  • 0.25 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons low-fat mayonnaise

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine lean ground turkey, egg white, low-sodium Worcestershire sauce, whole grain mustard, and freshly ground black pepper. Mix until ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty about 3/4 inch thick. Ensure the center is slightly thinner than the edges to allow even cooking.

Step 3

Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Add the turkey patties and cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

Step 4

About 2 minutes before the patties are done, place a slice of reduced-fat cheddar cheese on each patty to melt.

Step 5

While the patties are cooking, slice the red onion and tomato. Rinse and pat dry the lettuce leaves.

Step 6

Lightly toast the whole wheat hamburger buns in a toaster or on a dry skillet.

Step 7

Spread 1/2 tablespoon of low-fat mayonnaise on the bottom half of each bun.

Step 8

Layer a piece of lettuce, a slice of tomato, and a slice of red onion on the bottom bun. Place the cooked turkey patty with melted cheese on top.

Step 9

Finish with the top half of the bun and serve immediately with a side of fresh salad or baked sweet potato fries for a heart-healthy meal.
