Ingredients

  • 450 grams lean ground turkey
  • 40 grams oats
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium, chopped onion
  • 250 grams, sliced mushrooms
  • 250 milliliters low-sodium vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

Directions

Step 1

In a mixing bowl, combine the lean ground turkey, oats, egg whites, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Mix until fully incorporated.

Step 2

Form the mixture into 4 evenly sized patties, each about 1-inch thick.

Step 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the turkey patties and cook for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked and internal temperature reaches 74°C (165°F). Remove from skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the chopped onion. Sauté until translucent, about 3 minutes.

Step 5

Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until mushrooms are golden and soft.

Step 6

Pour in the low-sodium vegetable broth and bring to a simmer.

Step 7

In a small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in 2 tablespoons of water. Add the cornstarch mixture to the skillet and stir well, allowing the gravy to thicken, about 2 minutes.

Step 8

Stir in the fresh thyme and soy sauce, allowing the flavors to meld for an additional minute.

Step 9

Return the turkey patties to the skillet, coating them with the mushroom gravy.

Step 10

Serve the burger steaks with mushroom gravy hot as a main dish. Accompany with steamed vegetables or a salad for a heart-healthy meal.
