Ingredients

  • 2 cups white rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 pieces large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 stalks green onions (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the white rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Add the rice and 4 cups of water to a rice cooker or a pot, and cook according to the rice cooker's instructions or by boiling, then simmering until tender. Set aside and keep warm.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 3

Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a round patty about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 4

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and cook the beef patties for 4–5 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked and browned. Transfer the patties to a plate and keep warm.

Step 5

In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for 1–2 minutes until the flour is lightly golden and forms a roux.

Step 6

Gradually whisk in the beef broth and soy sauce. Continue whisking until the mixture is smooth and thickened into a gravy, about 3–4 minutes. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper, if needed. Reduce heat to low and keep warm.

Step 7

In a separate clean skillet, heat a small amount of vegetable oil over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the skillet one at a time and cook sunny-side-up, or to your desired doneness. Remove from heat.

Step 8

To assemble the Loco Moco, spoon a generous portion of cooked rice onto each plate. Place a beef patty on top of the rice, followed by a ladle of the brown gravy. Top each stack with a sunny-side-up egg.

Step 9

Sprinkle with chopped green onions for garnish, if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy your hearty Hawaiian Loco Moco breakfast!
