Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Beef round steak (about 1 inch thick)
  • 0.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 1 large Onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium Green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 15 ounces Diced tomatoes (with juice)
  • 1 cups Beef broth
  • 0.5 cups Brewed coffee (strong)
  • 1 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoons Dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoons Dried oregano
  • 4 cups Cooked egg noodles or mashed potatoes (for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Trim any excess fat from the beef round steak and cut it into portion-sized pieces (about 4-6 pieces).

Step 2

In a shallow dish, mix together the flour, salt, and black pepper. Dredge each piece of beef in the flour mixture, coating it evenly. Shake off any excess.

Step 3

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the steak pieces on both sides. This will take about 2-3 minutes per side. Transfer the browned steak to the crockpot.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the tomato paste to the skillet and cook for another minute, stirring frequently.

Step 5

Pour the sautéed vegetables and tomato paste mixture over the steak in the crockpot.

Step 6

Add the diced tomatoes (with their juice), beef broth, brewed coffee, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and dried oregano to the crockpot. Stir gently to combine.

Step 7

Cover the crockpot with its lid and set it to cook on low heat for 7-8 hours, or until the beef is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork.

Step 8

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with additional salt or pepper if needed.

Step 9

Serve the Swiss steak hot over a bed of cooked egg noodles or mashed potatoes. Spoon the rich tomato-coffee sauce over top for an extra burst of flavor.
