Ingredients

  • 4 whole ripe bananas
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup dark rum
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 scoops vanilla ice cream (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the bananas and slice them lengthwise into halves. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large skillet or frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Step 3

Once the butter has melted, stir in the brown sugar and cinnamon. Cook, stirring frequently, until the sugar dissolves and a caramel-like sauce forms, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Carefully place the banana halves into the skillet, cut side down. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bananas are golden and slightly softened.

Step 5

Add the dark rum to the skillet. If desired, use a long lighter to carefully ignite the rum for a dramatic flambe effect. Allow the flames to burn off completely before proceeding.

Step 6

Stir in the vanilla extract and gently spoon the sauce over the bananas to coat them evenly.

Step 7

Remove the skillet from the heat and let the bananas cool for 1-2 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken slightly.

Step 8

Serve the Havana Bananas warm, either on their own or topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
