Ingredients

  • 1 cup Warm water
  • 0.5 cup Whole milk (lukewarm)
  • 0.25 cup Unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
  • 3.25 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 serving Egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water or milk)
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame seeds (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, lukewarm milk, melted butter, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy, indicating the yeast has activated.

Step 2

Add the all-purpose flour and salt to the bowl. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.

Step 3

Add the egg to the dough and knead it on a clean, floured surface for 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for kneading.

Step 4

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 5

Punch down the risen dough to release any air bubbles. Divide it into 8 equal pieces for large hamburger buns, smaller pieces for sandwich rolls, or 10-12 pieces for hot dog buns.

Step 6

Shape each piece of dough into a ball (for hamburger or sandwich buns) or into a log shape (for hot dog buns). Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space between them to rise.

Step 7

Cover the shaped dough with a kitchen towel and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.

Step 8

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the buns gently with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.

Step 9

Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Rotate the baking sheet halfway through baking to ensure even browning.

Step 10

Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
