Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 tablespoons Baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 cups Unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
  • 1.25 cups Sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 1 cup Cooked ham (finely diced)
  • 0.75 cups Buttermilk (cold)
  • 1 unit Egg (beaten, for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

Step 3

Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

Stir in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese and diced ham until evenly distributed.

Step 5

Pour the cold buttermilk into the bowl and gently stir until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.

Step 7

Pat the dough into a 1-inch-thick rectangle. Use a 2.5-inch round biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass to cut out biscuits. Re-roll the scraps as needed to make more biscuits.

Step 8

Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.

Step 9

Brush the tops of the biscuits with the beaten egg for a golden finish.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.

Step 11

Remove the biscuits from the oven and allow them to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
