Ingredients

  • 5 large Russet potatoes
  • 2 cups Cooked ham
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2.5 cups Whole milk
  • 0.5 cups Heavy cream
  • 2 cups Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cups Grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves Minced garlic
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Dried thyme
  • 0.25 teaspoons Paprika
  • 1 for greasing Cooking spray or butter

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter and set aside.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and thinly slice them into approximately 1/8-inch-thick rounds. Place the slices in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning, then drain and pat dry with a clean towel when ready to use.

Step 3

Dice the cooked ham into small cubes or bite-sized pieces.

Step 4

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 5

Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, to create a smooth roux.

Step 6

Gradually whisk in the whole milk and heavy cream, cooking until the mixture thickens, about 3–4 minutes.

Step 7

Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth. Season the sauce with salt, black pepper, thyme, and paprika.

Step 8

Spread a layer of potato slices evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with a layer of diced ham, then pour a portion of the cheese sauce over the top, spreading it evenly.

Step 9

Repeat the layering process (potatoes, ham, cheese sauce) until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of cheese sauce on top.

Step 10

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.

Step 11

Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Step 12

Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the layers to set.

Step 13

Garnish with a sprinkle of chopped parsley if desired and serve warm.
