Ingredients

  • 1 cup Warm Water
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 3.5 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Olive Oil

Directions

Step 1

In a small saucepan, warm the milk and butter over low heat until the butter is just melted. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly to about 110°F (43°C).

Step 2

Pour the warm water into the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl. Add the sugar and sprinkle the yeast on top. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly and frothy.

Step 3

Add the milk-butter mixture, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.

Step 4

Gradually mix in the flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. If using a stand mixer, use the dough hook attachment and knead for 5-7 minutes on medium speed. Alternatively, knead by hand on a floured surface for about 8 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Lightly grease a large bowl with olive oil, place the dough in the bowl, and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free area for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a log or oval shape, about 6 inches long, to mimic grinder buns.

Step 7

Place the shaped dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each. Cover lightly with the towel and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy.

Step 8

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 9

Bake the buns for 18-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 10

Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Slice and use them for sandwiches, grinders, or subs. Enjoy!
