Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 375–400°F).
In a large bowl, season the ground beef with 1 teaspoon salt and 0.5 teaspoon black pepper. Mix gently without overworking the meat. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
Use your thumb to make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while grilling.
