Ingredients

  • 6 pieces Bratwurst sausages
  • 3 cups Beer (lager or pilsner)
  • 1 medium Yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 6 pieces Bratwurst buns
  • 1 cup (optional) Craft or Dijon mustard
  • 1 cup (optional) Sauerkraut
  • 1 tablespoon Cooking oil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the grill to medium heat (about 375°F/190°C). If using a charcoal grill, light the coals and let them turn white-hot before cooking.

Step 2

Thinly slice the yellow onion. In a large saucepan, combine the beer, sliced onion, and butter. Place this saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Step 3

Once simmering, add the bratwurst to the liquid. Simmer them for about 10 minutes to infuse flavor and partially cook the sausages.

Step 4

Remove the bratwurst from the beer mixture and set them aside. Reserve the onions from the saucepan for later use as a topping, if desired.

Step 5

Lightly oil the grill grates using cooking oil and a folded paper towel held with tongs.

Step 6

Place the bratwurst sausages on the grill. Cook them for about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and have nice grill marks. Ensure the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) using a meat thermometer.

Step 7

During the last few minutes of grilling, lightly toast the bratwurst buns by placing them on the grill, cut side down, for about 30-60 seconds until slightly crispy and warm.

Step 8

Once cooked, remove the bratwursts and buns from the grill. Assemble by placing the bratwurst in the bun and topping with mustard, sauerkraut, or grilled onions, if desired.

Step 9

Serve immediately with your favorite side dishes such as potato salad, pickles, or coleslaw.
