Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 250 g ground pork
  • 1 large egg
  • 60 g breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 400 g canned diced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 240 ml water
  • 400 g whole wheat or regular pasta
  • 100 g crumbled feta cheese
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, minced garlic, parsley, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step 2

Using your hands or a small scoop, form the mixture into approximately 20 to 24 small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sear the meatballs in batches until browned on all sides (they don’t need to cook through at this stage). Remove the meatballs and set them aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, heat another tablespoon of olive oil. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 4-5 minutes, or until softened and translucent.

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1-2 minutes to enhance its flavor. Then, add the canned diced tomatoes and water, stirring to combine.

While the meatballs are simmering, cook the pasta according to the package instructions in a large pot of salted boiling water. Reserve 120 ml (1/2 cup) of the pasta water before draining.

Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the sauce and meatballs. If the sauce is too thick, stir in a splash or two of the reserved pasta water until the desired consistency is achieved.

Step 9

Divide the pasta and meatballs among serving plates. Top with crumbled feta cheese and a sprinkle of fresh dill, if using. Serve immediately and enjoy.
