Ingredients

  • 500 g Ground beef
  • 250 g Ground pork
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 100 g Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 3 tbsp Fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 0.5 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1.5 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 3 tbsp Olive oil
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 400 g Crushed tomatoes
  • 250 ml Dry red wine
  • 1 piece Bay leaf
  • 250 ml Water

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, parsley, oregano, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all the ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 2

Form the mixture into elongated meat rolls, about 8–10 cm long and 3 cm thick. You should get around 8–10 rolls.

Step 3

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meat rolls in batches, browning them on all sides. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1–2 minutes to caramelize slightly.

Step 5

Add the crushed tomatoes, red wine, water, bay leaf, and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine and bring the sauce to a simmer.

Step 6

Return the browned meat rolls to the skillet, ensuring they are submerged in the tomato wine sauce.

Step 7

Cover the skillet and simmer on low heat for 30–35 minutes, turning the meat rolls halfway through the cooking time. The sauce should thicken and the rolls should cook through.

Step 8

Remove the bay leaf, taste, and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.

Step 9

Serve the Greek Meat Rolls hot, spooning the savory tomato wine sauce over them. Pair with crusty bread, rice, or a side of roasted vegetables.
