Ingredients

  • 2 Ruby red grapefruit
  • 4 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoons Ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 4 Fresh mint leaves (for garnish, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Cut the grapefruits in half crosswise to create 4 halves. Use a small paring knife to loosen the segments by cutting along the edges and in between the membranes. This step will make it easier to scoop out the grapefruit flesh later.

Step 2

If you prefer a hint of spice, mix the granulated sugar with the ground cinnamon in a small bowl.

Step 3

Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the sugar (or sugar-cinnamon mixture) evenly over the cut surface of each grapefruit half.

Step 4

Set your oven rack about 6 inches below the broiler. Preheat the broiler on high.

Step 5

Place the grapefruit halves, cut side up, on a baking sheet or in a heatproof baking dish.

Step 6

Broil the grapefruits for 4-5 minutes, or until the sugar has melted and turned into a golden, bubbly crust. Be sure to watch closely to prevent burning.

Step 7

Remove the grapefruits from the oven and let them cool slightly for 2-3 minutes before serving.

Step 8

Garnish each grapefruit half with a fresh mint leaf if desired and serve warm.
