Ingredients

  • 16 oz elbow macaroni
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2.5 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 0.5 tsp ground paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a large baking dish and set it aside.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, then cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain the macaroni and set it aside.

Step 3

In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly to form a roux.

Step 4

Gradually pour in the milk and heavy cream, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook over medium heat until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low, then stir in the shredded cheddar, Gruyere, and Parmesan cheeses until melted and smooth.

Step 6

Season the cheese sauce with Dijon mustard, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.

Step 7

Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and gently fold until evenly coated.

Step 8

Pour the cheesy macaroni mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 9

In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, olive oil, and Italian seasoning. Mix until the breadcrumbs are evenly coated.

Step 10

Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the macaroni.

Step 11

Bake the macaroni and cheese in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crispy.

Step 12

Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
