Ingredients

  • 1 9-inch shell Pre-baked pie crust
  • 2.5 cups Whole milk
  • 0.75 cups Granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 3 large Egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 3 medium Bananas
  • 1 cup Whipped cream (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Shaved chocolate or toasted coconut (optional garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Prepare a 9-inch pie crust by baking it according to its instructions if using store-bought, or prepare your favorite homemade recipe. Allow it to cool completely while preparing the filling.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and salt.

Step 3

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps.

Step 4

Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it starts to thicken and bubble, about 6-8 minutes.

Step 5

In a small bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Slowly drizzle about 1 cup of the hot milk mixture into the yolks, whisking constantly, to temper the eggs.

Step 6

Pour the tempered egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the custard is thick and coats the back of a spoon. Be careful not to let it boil.

Step 7

Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth.

Step 8

Let the custard cool for 5-10 minutes to slightly thicken.

Step 9

Slice the bananas into thin rounds. Arrange a single layer of bananas on the bottom of the cooled pie crust.

Step 10

Pour half of the custard over the bananas and spread it evenly.

Step 11

Add another layer of banana slices over the custard. Pour the remaining custard on top and smooth it out with a spatula.

Step 12

Chill the pie in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or until set.

Step 13

Before serving, top with whipped cream if desired, and garnish with shaved chocolate or toasted coconut for an extra touch of flavor and texture.

Step 14

Slice and serve chilled. Enjoy your homemade Granny's Banana Cream Pie!
