Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 slices Cheese slices (optional, your choice of cheddar, American, or Swiss)
  • 4 pcs Burger buns
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 4 pcs Lettuce leaves
  • 8 pcs Tomato slices
  • 12 pcs Pickle slices
  • 0.25 cup Ketchup
  • 0.25 cup Mustard

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently with your hands until the seasoning is evenly distributed, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 2

Divide the ground beef mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a patty about ½ inch thick, creating a shallow indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent doming as they cook.

Step 3

Preheat a skillet or grill to medium-high heat. If using a skillet, lightly grease it with a bit of butter or oil.

Step 4

Cook the burger patties for 3-4 minutes on the first side without moving them, allowing a nice crust to form. Then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for well-done burgers. If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking and cover with a lid to melt.

Step 5

While the burgers cook, toast the burger buns. Spread a small amount of butter on the cut sides of the buns and toast them on the grill or in a dry skillet until golden brown.

Step 6

Assemble the burgers: Start with the bottom bun, followed by a lettuce leaf, a cooked patty, tomato slices, pickle slices, ketchup, and mustard. Add the top bun to finish.

Step 7

Serve immediately with your favorite sides, such as fries or coleslaw, and enjoy Grandpa Elmer's classic hamburgers!
