Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples (preferably Granny Smith or McIntosh)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs (preferably fresh or panko)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish or a similarly sized casserole dish with a thin layer of butter.

Step 2

Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin, even slices. Place them in a large mixing bowl and toss them with the lemon juice to prevent browning.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sprinkle this mixture over the sliced apples and toss to coat evenly. Set aside.

Step 4

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, stir in the breadcrumbs and granulated sugar. Cook for about 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the breadcrumbs are lightly golden and fragrant. Remove from heat.

Step 5

Spread one-third of the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer half of the apple mixture on top of the breadcrumbs. Repeat with another one-third of the breadcrumbs, followed by the remaining apples. Top with the final layer of breadcrumbs.

Step 6

Pour the water evenly over the entire dish to ensure the dessert stays moist as it bakes.

Step 7

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and the apples are tender.

Step 8

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm on its own or topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
