Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 1 pound Ground pork
  • 1 cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 0.5 cup Grated Parmesan cheese
  • 0.25 cup Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 4 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 units Large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 28-ounce cans Crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 unit Yellow onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 cup Water

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, Italian breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, garlic, eggs, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Do not overmix.

Step 2

Using your hands, form the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs and set them aside on a tray or plate.

Step 3

In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the meatballs in batches, searing them on all sides until browned. Remove the browned meatballs from the skillet and set aside. (They will finish cooking in the sauce.)

Step 4

In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 6

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, oregano, basil, and sugar to the pot. Stir well to combine.

Step 7

Bring the sauce to a simmer, then gently add the browned meatballs to the sauce.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the sauce and meatballs simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 9

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper, if needed.

Step 10

Serve the meatballs and sauce hot over cooked pasta, polenta, or crusty bread. Garnish with additional chopped parsley or grated Parmesan, if desired.
