Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 4.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, warm the milk over low heat until it is slightly warm (not hot). Add 4 tablespoons of butter and stir until melted. Remove from heat and let it cool to a lukewarm temperature.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Add the yeast mixture, milk mixture, and the egg. Mix well until a sticky dough forms.

Step 4

Gradually add the remaining flour, half a cup at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and is soft but not sticky. You may not need all 4.5 cups of flour.

Step 5

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 6

Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 7

Punch the dough down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide it into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.

Step 8

Place the balls of dough into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spacing them evenly apart.

Step 9

Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise again for 30-40 minutes, or until they have doubled in size.

Step 10

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 11

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

Step 12

Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush them with melted butter for a glossy finish.

Step 13

Serve warm and enjoy!
