Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons Dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 cup Warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 3 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 2 large Yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons Poppy seeds
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (for topping)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.

Step 2

Add the flour, salt, and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.

Step 3

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 4

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 5

While the dough is rising, prepare the topping. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-12 minutes or until the onions are soft and lightly caramelized. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Step 6

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Roll or press the dough into a rectangle, approximately 12x16 inches.

Step 7

Evenly spread the caramelized onions over the top of the dough. Sprinkle the poppy seeds and additional salt over the onions.

Step 8

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Let the dough rest for an additional 15 minutes while the oven heats up.

Step 9

Bake the pletzel in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the bottom is cooked through.

Step 10

Allow the pletzel to cool slightly, then slice into squares or rectangles and serve. Enjoy Grandma Eva's delicious onion board!
