Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium (diced) onion
  • 3 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 14-ounce can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 cup (grated) Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons (chopped, optional) fresh basil

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large, deep skillet or sauté pan over medium-high heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.

Step 3

Add the diced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium and add the diced tomatoes (with their juices), tomato paste, chicken broth, and water. Stir well to combine.

Step 5

Break the spaghetti in half and add it to the pan. Gently push the pasta down so it is submerged in the liquid.

Step 6

Season with Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Stir to distribute the seasonings evenly.

Step 7

Bring the mixture to a simmer and reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan and let it cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent the spaghetti from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

Step 8

Check if the spaghetti is tender. If the liquid has reduced too much before the pasta is fully cooked, add an additional 1/4 cup of water at a time as needed.

Step 9

Once the spaghetti is cooked and the sauce has thickened, remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese.

Step 10

Garnish with fresh chopped basil, if desired, and serve immediately.
