Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Unsweetened applesauce
  • 0.75 cup Molasses
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Vegetable oil
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 0.5 cup Raisins (optional)
  • 0.5 cup Chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt until well combined.

Step 3

Add the applesauce, molasses, sugar, vegetable oil, and eggs to the dry ingredients in the bowl. Stir everything together using a wooden spoon or rubber spatula until a smooth batter forms. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 4

If using, gently fold in the raisins and chopped nuts at this stage.

Step 5

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly with a spatula.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 7

Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 8

Once cooled, slice into squares or rectangles and serve as is, or dust with powdered sugar for a decorative touch.
