Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 cup Raisins
  • 1.75 cups Buttermilk, cold
  • 1 large Egg, beaten

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a large cast iron skillet or a baking sheet.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3

Using your fingertips or a pastry cutter, cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

Stir in the raisins to evenly distribute them throughout the dough.

Step 5

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and beaten egg.

Step 6

Slowly add the buttermilk mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky and shaggy.

Step 7

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to form a round loaf.

Step 8

Place the loaf onto the prepared skillet or baking sheet. With a sharp knife, cut a large 'X' across the top about 1/2 inch deep. This allows the bread to bake evenly.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. You can also insert a skewer into the center; it should come out clean.

Step 10

Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

Step 11

Serve warm or at room temperature with butter, jam, or as is. Enjoy!
