Ingredients

  • 1 piece Unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • 2.5 cups Whole milk
  • 0.75 cups Granulated sugar
  • 3 Large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 2

Roll out the pie crust and press it into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim any excess and crimp the edges if desired.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, warm the milk over medium heat until it is just about to simmer, but do not let it boil. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Step 4

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, salt, and nutmeg until well combined.

Step 5

Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs and prevent curdling.

Step 6

Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into the prepared pie crust to remove any cooked egg bits and ensure a smooth custard.

Step 7

Carefully transfer the pie to the preheated oven. Bake for 15 minutes at 400°F (200°C).

Step 8

After 15 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 325°F (165°C) and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

Step 9

Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. The custard will firm up as it cools.

Step 10

Once cooled, refrigerate the pie for at least 2 hours before serving to allow it to fully set. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
