Ingredients

  • 8 cups (crumbled) cornbread
  • 4 slices (crumbled) stale white bread
  • 0.5 cups (unsalted) butter
  • 1 large (diced) yellow onion
  • 3 medium (diced) celery stalks
  • 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 3 large (beaten) eggs
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon (ground) sage
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons (chopped, optional for garnish) fresh parsley

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread and crumbled stale white bread. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 4

Pour the sautéed onions and celery, along with the melted butter, over the bread mixture. Gently toss to combine.

Step 5

In another bowl, whisk together the chicken broth and beaten eggs. Stir in the poultry seasoning, sage, salt, and black pepper.

Step 6

Pour the wet mixture over the bread mixture in the large bowl. Stir gently until the mixture is just combined and evenly moistened. The mixture should be moist but not soupy. Add a bit more chicken broth if needed.

Step 7

Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the dressing is set.

Step 9

Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if desired.
