Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 packet Dry yeast
  • 1 cup Warm milk
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 Eggs
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 8 ounces Cream cheese (softened)
  • 0.5 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1 Egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract (for filling)
  • 1 Egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, granulated sugar, and dry yeast. Stir well and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.

Step 2

Add the melted butter, vanilla extract, eggs, and salt into the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.

Step 3

Gradually add the flour one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.

Step 4

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 5

While the dough is rising, prepare the cheese filling. In a medium bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.

Step 6

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a clean, lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal portions.

Step 7

Roll one portion of the dough into a rectangle roughly 12x16 inches in size. Place the dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 8

Spread half of the cheese filling down the center of the dough, leaving about 4 inches of dough on each side for braiding.

Step 9

With a sharp knife or kitchen scissors, make slanted cuts (about 1 inch apart) along both sides of the filling. Fold the strips over the filling, alternating sides to create a braided pattern. Repeat with the second portion of dough and the remaining filling.

Step 10

Brush the braids with the egg wash. Cover loosely with a kitchen towel and let them rise for an additional 20 minutes while preheating the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Step 12

Optional: Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with icing for extra sweetness before serving.
