Ingredients

  • 4 medium Granny Smith apples
  • 75 grams Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 85 grams Unsalted butter
  • 8 slices White or whole wheat bread
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon Powdered sugar (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and generously butter 4 small ramekins or pudding molds.

Step 2

Peel, core, and finely dice the Granny Smith apples.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, melt 25 grams of the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and lemon juice.

Step 4

Cook the apple mixture for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft and syrupy. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool slightly.

Step 5

Trim the crusts off the slices of bread and flatten each slice gently with a rolling pin. Melt the remaining 60 grams of butter in a small saucepan or microwave-safe dish.

Step 6

Brush both sides of each bread slice lightly with the melted butter. Line the sides and bottom of each ramekin with the buttered bread, pressing firmly to ensure there are no gaps.

Step 7

Fill the bread-lined ramekins with the cooked apple mixture, pressing it down gently but firmly to pack it in. Cover the top with another piece of buttered bread to seal the charlotte.

Step 8

Place the ramekins on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the charlottes feel firm to the touch.

Step 9

Allow the charlottes to cool for 5 minutes, then gently loosen the edges with a knife and invert them onto serving plates.

Step 10

Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, and serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
