Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or similar tart variety)
  • 0.75 cups brown sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoons nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups day-old bread (cubed, crusts removed)
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 0.5 cups water
  • 1 serving (optional) optional whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish or similar-sized casserole dish.

Step 2

Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Place the sliced apples into a large mixing bowl and toss them with the lemon juice to prevent browning.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.

Step 4

In another bowl, toss the cubed bread with the melted butter until evenly coated.

Step 5

Spread one-third of the buttered bread cubes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

Step 6

Layer half of the sliced apples on top of the bread cubes. Sprinkle half of the brown sugar mixture evenly over the apples.

Step 7

Add another one-third of the bread cubes as the next layer, followed by the remaining apples and the rest of the sugar mixture.

Step 8

Finish with the remaining buttered bread cubes as the top layer.

Step 9

Pour the water evenly over the entire dish to help the ingredients soften and meld together during baking.

Step 10

Cover the dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp and the apples are tender.

Step 11

Allow the Apple Brown Betty to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
