Ingredients

  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 units Large eggs
  • 0.25 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Anise extract
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Milk (for glaze)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Anise extract (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons Sprinkles (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the softened butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

Add the eggs, milk, and anise extract to the bowl. Mix until a smooth, slightly sticky dough forms. If the dough feels too sticky to handle, add a tablespoon of flour at a time until you can work with it comfortably.

Step 5

Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into balls. Place them about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the bottoms of the cookies are lightly golden. The tops should remain pale.

Step 7

While the cookies are baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and anise extract until smooth.

Step 8

Once the cookies are cool enough to handle but still slightly warm, dip the tops of each cookie into the glaze. Allow any excess glaze to drip off before placing the cookies back on the parchment paper.

Step 9

If desired, sprinkle the tops with colorful sprinkles while the glaze is still wet.

Step 10

Allow the glaze to set completely before serving or storing in an airtight container for up to a week.
