Ingredients

  • 6 medium-sized Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1 large Yellow onion
  • 2 cups Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 1 tablespoon Unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh thyme
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 1.5 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 tablespoon All-purpose flour

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.

Step 2

Peel the Yukon Gold potatoes and slice them into 1/8-inch thick rounds using a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer for even slicing.

Step 3

Peel and thinly slice the yellow onion into half-moons.

Step 4

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 5

Pour the heavy cream and whole milk into the saucepan, stirring to combine. Add the thyme, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat.

Step 6

Layer one-third of the sliced potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish. Top with one-third of the sliced onions. Sprinkle about 1/2 cup of shredded Gruyère cheese and 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese over the layer.

Step 7

Repeat the layering process two more times (potatoes, onions, cheeses), ending with the cheeses on top.

Step 8

Slowly pour the warm cream mixture evenly over the layered potato gratin, ensuring it seeps through the layers.

Step 9

Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour evenly across the top layer of cheese to help the ingredients bind and brown.

Step 10

Cover the dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.

Step 11

After 40 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Step 12

Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow it to set. Serve warm and enjoy!
