Ingredients

  • 14 oz extra firm tofu
  • 3 tbsp gluten-free tamari sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 stalks green onions, sliced
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil (such as avocado oil)

Directions

Step 1

Start by draining the tofu. Remove it from the package and wrap it in a clean kitchen towel. Place a heavy object, like a cast-iron skillet, on top for 15-20 minutes to press out any excess moisture.

Step 2

While the tofu is being pressed, prepare the marinade. In a small mixing bowl, combine the gluten-free tamari sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup, toasted sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated fresh ginger. Stir well to mix all ingredients together.

Step 3

Once the tofu has been pressed, cut it into 1-inch cubes and place them in a shallow dish or a sealable plastic bag.

Step 4

Pour the marinade over the tofu cubes, ensuring they are all well-coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish with plastic wrap, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the tofu to absorb the flavors. For best results, marinate for 2 hours or overnight.

Step 5

When ready to cook, heat cooking oil in a large non-stick pan over medium-high heat.

Step 6

Once the oil is hot, add the marinated tofu cubes. Do not overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if necessary.

Step 7

Fry the tofu for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.

Step 8

Remove the tofu from the pan and let them drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

Step 9

Garnish the tofu with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving.

Step 10

Serve the marinated tofu hot as an entrée, in salads, or as a topping for rice or noodles.
