Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Pork shoulder
  • 3 tablespoons Gluten-free soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Rice wine
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame oil
  • 3 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Five-spice powder
  • 1 drop Red food coloring (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Cut the pork shoulder into long strips, approximately 2 inches wide.

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine the gluten-free soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, brown sugar, rice wine, sesame oil, minced garlic, five-spice powder, and red food coloring if using.

Step 3

Place the pork strips into the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat.

Step 4

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 5

Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top. Arrange the marinated pork strips on the rack, allowing the excess marinade to drip off.

Step 6

Bake the pork in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Turn and baste the pork with remaining marinade every 10 minutes.

Step 7

After 30 minutes, increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C) and continue to cook for an additional 15-20 minutes until the pork is charred and sticky, turning once during the process.

Step 8

Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Step 9

Serve the gluten-free char siew with steamed rice or noodles, and garnish with some fresh green onions if desired.
