Ingredients

  • 2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Light corn syrup
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 teaspoon Flavoring extract (e.g., peppermint, vanilla, or fruit flavor)
  • 3 drops Liquid food coloring (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Directions

Step 1

Prepare a large baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Set it aside.

Step 2

In a medium-sized heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, light corn syrup, and water. Stir to combine.

Step 3

Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil without stirring. Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan, ensuring the tip does not touch the bottom.

Step 4

Let the mixture cook until it reaches 300°F (149°C), also known as the hard crack stage. This will take about 25–30 minutes. Do not stir during this process.

Step 5

Once the mixture reaches 300°F, immediately remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the flavoring extract and food coloring (if using), working quickly as the mixture will begin to harden.

Step 6

Carefully pour the hot candy mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, tilting the sheet as needed to spread it into an even layer.

Step 7

Allow the candy to cool completely at room temperature until it hardens, about 1–2 hours.

Step 8

Once hardened, break the candy into shards by tapping it gently with a mallet or the back of a spoon.

Step 9

If desired, dust the broken shards with powdered sugar to prevent them from sticking together.

Step 10

Store the glass candy pieces in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
