Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoons baking soda
  • 0.75 cups unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cups brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1 cups molasses
  • 1 cups hot water
  • 1 unit large egg

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.

Step 2

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and baking soda. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar together using a hand mixer or stand mixer until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Gradually mix in the molasses until fully combined.

Step 5

Add the hot water to the molasses mixture and stir until smooth. The mixture will look runny, but this is normal.

Step 6

Beat the egg in a small bowl and then stir it into the wet mixture until well incorporated.

Step 7

Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, gently mixing just until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. Do not overmix.

Step 8

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the surface with a spatula.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the gingerbread comes out clean.

Step 10

Allow the gingerbread to cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then carefully turn it out of the pan to cool completely before slicing and serving.
