Ingredients

  • 6 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup rolled oats
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Step 2

Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. Place them in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3

Add the lemon juice, brown sugar, granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and vanilla extract to the apples. Toss to coat them evenly. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish.

Step 4

In another mixing bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, remaining 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, remaining 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and salt. Mix well.

Step 5

Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, work the cold butter pieces into the flour and oat mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 6

Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples in the baking dish, ensuring all the apples are covered.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Step 8

Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy Gina's Apple Joy warm, optionally paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
