Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 large Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces Canned whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 0.25 teaspoon Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 5 leaves Fresh basil leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper, freshly ground

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes, until it becomes soft and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute, being careful not to let it burn.

Step 4

Pour in the canned whole peeled tomatoes with their juice and break them up using a spoon or potato masher.

Step 5

Stir in the dried oregano and crushed red pepper flakes (if using).

Step 6

Season the sauce with salt and black pepper. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

After the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded, stir in the fresh basil leaves.

Step 8

Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt or pepper, if needed.

Step 9

Remove the sauce from the heat, and serve immediately over cooked pasta, as a pizza base, or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
