Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground ginger
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon White pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.75 cup Brown sugar, packed
  • 0.5 cup Honey
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons Milk (for frosting)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Vanilla extract (for frosting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, white pepper, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the softened butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy.

Step 4

Add the honey to the butter mixture and mix until well incorporated.

Step 5

Beat in the egg until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Step 6

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a thick dough forms. If the dough feels too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time until it is manageable.

Step 7

Roll the dough into small 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the cookies are slightly puffed and golden on the bottom. Remove them from the oven and let cool completely on a wire rack.

Step 9

While the cookies cool, prepare the frosting by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth.

Step 10

Once the cookies are cooled, dip the tops of each cookie into the frosting, allowing any excess to drip off, and then place them back on the wire rack to set.

Step 11

Let the frosting harden completely before storing the cookies in an airtight container. These Pfeffernusse cookies taste even better after a day or two as the flavors meld together!
