Ingredients

  • 2 pieces (boneless, skinless) Chicken breast
  • 12 pieces (peeled and deveined) Large shrimp
  • 1 cup Cornstarch
  • 0.5 cup All-purpose flour
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 cups (for frying) Vegetable oil
  • 0.25 cup Soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Hoisin sauce
  • 3 tablespoons Sugar
  • 0.5 cup Chicken broth
  • 3 cloves (minced) Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon (minced) Ginger
  • 1 teaspoon Dried red chili flakes
  • 2 stalks (chopped) Green onions
  • 1 tablespoon (for garnish) Sesame seeds

Directions

Step 1

Cut the chicken breasts into bite-sized cubes and place them in a bowl. Pat the shrimp dry with a paper towel and add to another bowl.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs together. In a separate bowl, combine the cornstarch, flour, salt, and black pepper.

Step 3

Coat the chicken pieces first by dipping them into the egg mixture, followed by the cornstarch-flour mixture. Repeat with the shrimp.

Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken pieces in batches until golden and crispy, about 5 minutes per batch, and set them aside on a paper towel to drain excess oil. Repeat with the shrimp, frying for about 2-3 minutes per batch.

Step 5

In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, sugar, and chicken broth. Set the sauce aside.

Step 6

Remove all but 1 tablespoon of oil from the skillet and reduce the heat to medium. Add the minced garlic, ginger, and dried chili flakes, and stir-fry for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 7

Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet and bring it to a simmer. Allow it to thicken slightly, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 8

Add the fried chicken and shrimp into the skillet, tossing them gently to coat them evenly with the sauce.

Step 9

Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.

Step 10

Serve hot over steamed rice or alongside stir-fried vegetables.
