Ingredients

  • 14 oz Firm tofu
  • 3 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 3 tbsp Soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp Rice vinegar
  • 3 tbsp Hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp Maple syrup
  • 1 tsp Sesame oil
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Ginger, minced
  • 0.5 tsp Red chili flakes
  • 3 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 2 stalks Green onions, chopped
  • 1 tbsp White sesame seeds
  • 4 cups Cooked white rice or steamed vegetables (for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Drain the tofu and press it between sheets of paper towel or in a tofu press to remove excess moisture. Cut into 1-inch cubes.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, toss the tofu cubes with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch until evenly coated.

Step 3

Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu and cook until golden and crispy on all sides, about 6-8 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, maple syrup, sesame oil, and the remaining 1 tablespoon of cornstarch until smooth. Set the sauce aside.

Step 5

In the same skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add minced garlic, ginger, and red chili flakes, and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 6

Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet and cook on low heat, stirring continuously, until the sauce thickens, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 7

Add the cooked tofu into the skillet and toss to coat all the pieces evenly in the sauce.

Step 8

Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.

Step 9

Serve immediately over cooked white rice or steamed vegetables.
